Abstract

|
Minoxidil, an orally administered, peripheral vasodilator used to treat hypertension, cause hypertrichosis in more than 80% of users. We tried to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of 3% minoxidil solution of thirty-five patients with male pattern baldness or alopecia areata. Patients were treated with topical application of 3% minoxidil solution twice a day for 6 months.
The effect was assessed by the appearance or increase in number of vellus hair or terminal hairs on bald areas.
1) The effect of topical application of 3% minoxidil solution in patients with male patients baldness: by week 24, we found the effect in 7 of 10 patients(70%)
2) The effect of the topical application of 3% minoxidil solution in patients with alopecia areata: by week 24, we found the effect in 11 of 15 patients (73. 3%)
3) The side effects observed in 35 patients with 3% minoxidil solution were local pruritus in one(2.8%)
In our clinical studies, it is suggested that topical minoxidil may be an effective and relatively safe therapeutic agent for male pattern baldness and alopecia areata.
